      Is SmartyPig a bank?
      SmartyPig is not a bank. SmartyPig was designed to help people save for specific savings goals in conjunction with a bank partner. Your SmartyPig funds are held by our banking partner, BBVA Compass, an FDIC insured bank. Effective November 1, 2016, the SmartyPig banking partner will be Sallie Mae Bank, an FDIC-insured bank.

      Are there any hidden fees?
      Opening, funding, and redeeming a goal to your funding source with SmartyPig is absolutely FREE. SmartyPig account holders may also make contributions to other users’ goals or buy SmartyPig gift cards at NO cost if they use their existing SmartyPig funding source. The fee to make a contribution or buy a SmartyPig gift card using a credit card is a flat 2.9%.

      BBVA Compass is the 15th largest bank in the United States and the American arm of one of the biggest banks in the world. Your SmartyPig account is a separate account held in your name at BBVA Compass, an FDIC insured bank.

      Is SmartyPig secure and are my funds safe?
      SmartyPig.com is tested and certified daily to pass the McAfee® SECURE Security Scan. McAfee® is the world’s leading provider of website security services and probes SmartyPig.com daily for known vulnerabilities. SmartyPig.com utilizes the most trusted and secure option for SSL, VeriSign® True 128-bit Extended Validation SSL. This provides the strongest encryption available. SmartyPig also undergoes regular financial and security audits. SmartyPig accounts are held at BBVA Compass and are insured by the FDIC to the full legal maximum. At present FDIC insures all deposits up to $250,000 per account holder. Effective November 1, 2016, the SmartyPig banking partner will be Sallie Mae Bank, an FDIC-insured bank.

      Does SmartyPig allow joint accounts?
      SmartyPig does not offer Joint Accounts and is for individuals only. However,you may add a Payable on Death (POD) Beneficiary to your SmartyPig profile. SmartyPig Primary Account Holders can invite Limited Access Users to their SmartyPig Savings Account. The Primary Account Holder may designate Limited Access Users as “View-Only” or “Limited Access” to their Savings Account. Limited Access Users added to the account have restricted access to the Savings Accounts. They do not have access to, or ownership of, the funds or interest earned on the account.

      Is SmartyPig a self-managed account?
      Yes. SmartyPig is a self-managed account and all functions are performed solely by the user. When creating goals, the user will designate when transactions into their SmartyPig account will take place. Users are responsible for monitoring their own account and for editing their goal information.

    • Transition to Sallie Mae
      When will the transition to Sallie Mae Bank take place?
      Sallie Mae Bank will become the new banking partner of SmartyPig on November 1, 2016.

      What do I have to do prior to the transition?
      Before your SmartyPig account can be transitioned from BBVA Compass to Sallie Mae Bank, you must login to your SmartyPig account and Opt-In to the transfer. Those who do not Opt-In, will not be transitioned to Sallie Mae Bank and funds will be returned to their attached funding source prior to the transition.

      What if I don’t want my SmartyPig account to be moved to Sallie Mae Bank?
      You will have the option of opting out of the transition to Sallie Mae Bank. If you choose to Opt-out of the transition, or fail to make a selection prior to October 23, 2016, your SmartyPig account will not be transitioned to Sallie Mae Bank. If you choose to Opt-out, we request that you close all your SmartyPig goals prior to October 23, 2016. Any savings balance in your BBVA Compass account as of October 24, 2016 will be returned to the external funding account.

      After choosing to Opt-in or Opt-out of the transition, am I able to change my mind?
      Yes. If you choose to Opt-out and decide you would like to join us at Sallie Mae Bank, simply login to your SmartyPig account where you will have an alert notification on your Dashboard indicating your choice before Oct. 31, 2016. At the bottom of the notification, you will have an option to change your preference. If you have decided to Opt-in and would not like to make the transition to Sallie Mae Bank, you will simply need to close all your goals prior to October 30, 2016 and contact our customer support center to close your SmartyPig account.

      Will my funds be FDIC Insured during the transition and once they have arrived at Sallie Mae Bank?
      Yes. Your funds will be FDIC Insured during the transfer and will remain insured by the FDIC to the full legal maximum amount.

      Can I expect any changes to SmartyPig?
      Yes. With any transition there is bound to be change. We are focusing on making the all new SmartyPig in partnership with Sallie Mae Bank the best SmartyPig has ever been. You can immediately expect to see higher interest rates, new features never offered through SmartyPig such as partial withdrawals, joint accounts, and monthly payment of interest. We are going to present you with a new look and feel that will make SmartyPig easier to navigate. Some of our features will not be available immediately as we work with Sallie Mae to build upon their capabilities. However, we have every intention of having the features you have come to love about SmartyPig available in early 2017.

      Why the change from BBVA Compass to Sallie Mae Bank?
      BBVA has been a great partner for 6 years. But over time both companies have evolved and agreed it was time for a change. We found a great partner in Sallie Mae Bank.       Can you still register for a SmartyPig account prior to the transition?
      Effective October 1, 2016, SmartyPig will temporarily suspend accepting registration attempts until November 1, 2016 following our transition to Sallie Mae Bank. We encourage you to leave us your email address on the registration page so we can send you updates as to when registration is back open.

      When is the last day I can contribute funds to my goal before the transition?
      The last day to make a contribution to your goals prior to the transition is October 15, 2016. After this date, you will not be able to do an ‘Add Funds’ or have a ‘Recurring Contribution’ take place until the transition takes place on November 1, 2016.

      Will my recurring contributions carry over and take place following the transition to Sallie Mae Bank?
      As long as your recurring contribution has a frequency of ‘Monthly’ or ‘Bi-Weekly’ it will continue after the transition. If you have a recurring contribution frequency of ‘Twice-Monthly’, you will need to edit your goal to a frequency of ‘Monthly’ or ‘Bi-Weekly’ either before or after the transition. Recurring contributions set to a frequency of ‘Twice-Montly’ at the time of the transition will be switched to ‘None’ effective November 1, 2016.

      Your SmartyPig account is a separate account held in your name at BBVA Compass, an FDIC insured bank. FDIC insurance covers an individual account holder for up to the maximum amount allowed by law in accounts held at BBVA Compass.

      Can I add a Payable on Death (POD) Beneficiary to my SmartyPig profile?
      Yes, you may add a Payable on Death (POD) Beneficiary to your SmartyPig profile. Only one (1) U.S. Citizen over eighteen (18) years of age is eligible to be a beneficiary on a payable on death account. You may add a POD Beneficiary by going to the "My Profile" page in your SmartyPig profile.

      Can my child or a minor under my care have a SmartyPig account?
      Anyone can have a SmartyPig account. But for our minor (under 18 years old) customers, a parent or legal guardian must open his or her own account first and then invite the minor to be a limited access user.

      What is my account number?
      SmartyPig account numbers are encrypted for security reasons. For support and tracking purposes, we refer to accounts by account and goal name. You can only transfer funds into your SmartyPig account via ACH by logging into your account.

      Will I receive an account statement each month?
      Yes. Each month SmartyPig will generate an eStatement showing your account activity. This will be available for viewing in your SmartyPig profile and can be downloaded in a PDF format. This eStatement can be found in the Account Activity section of your profile.

      What if my bank or lender requires a Verification of Deposit for my SmartyPig account?
      Monthly eStatements are available for viewing in your SmartyPig profile and can be downloaded in a PDF format. In the event you require a Verification of Deposit other than your eStatement, please contact our Customer Support Department and our banking partner will be able to provide you with this information.

      Will I get a 1099-INT form for my SmartyPig Savings Account to assist in filing taxes?
      Users earning at least $10 in interest from our banking partner will receive a 1099 INT. 1099's issued from our banking partner, BBVA Compass, will only be available online and will appear in the Account Activity section of your profile by January 31.

      Can I earn more than one interest rate for my SmartyPig account?
      No. For purposes of determining the applicable rate tier for your Savings Account, your daily collected balance shall include the total daily collected balance of ALL of your SmartyPig Savings Accounts. The daily collected balance in each of your SmartyPig Savings Accounts will be added together and your applicable interest rate and APY will be based on the total daily collected balance of all your SmartyPig Savings Accounts.       How is interest paid?
      Interest is configured using a daily accrual method with quarterly postings to a customer’s account. Interest is paid on March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31.

      When does interest begin to accrue?
      Interest begins to accrue once the funds have been received by SmartyPig and have posted to your account. This means that SmartyPig has collected the funds and BBVA Compass has full use of said funds. For your security, funds may take up to 2-business banking days to post to your account.

      If I close my goal before interest is paid, will I still get the interest that I have accrued?
      Yes. You will be paid for all accrued interest up until the day you close your goal.

      What are the requirements to open a SmartyPig Account?
      To open an account, you must be at least 18 years of age and have an existing checking or savings account. You must also be one of the following: 1) U.S. citizen, 2) U.S. permanent resident alien with a green card and social security number or 3) Resident with a social security number.

      I am receiving a message that my application is pending. How long will this take?
      Online applications requiring further verification by our banking partner, BBVA Compass, are generally reviewed in 2 to 3 business days. Once your application has been verified, you will receive notification via email with your next steps.

      I am receiving a message that I failed the quiz. I am certain I answered the questions correctly. What happened?
      The identity verification quiz is provided by Equifax, one of the world’s largest online verification services. For the security of our users, SmartyPig does not see the questions or the answers that you are given during the registration process. By failing the quiz, it simply means that Equifax was unable to verify your identity, and this could have been from a number of different reasons other than answering the questions incorrectly. In this event, a form will be mailed to the address you provided during registration. Once you receive the form, simply complete, sign, and mail it back in the pre-stamped return envelope. Then when we receive the completed letter, we will process your application manually.

      I forgot my username and/or password, what now?
      Follow the steps on SmartyPig.com if you forgot your username. Passwords are case specific and must be at least 8 characters and contain at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter and one number. If you forgot your password, click on the “forgot password” link.

      The temporary password sent to me by SmartyPig won’t work?
      Please try to copy the password from the email and paste it in the password field. Also, be sure there are no spaces before and after the password. If you try typing the password, please make sure all characters are case specific. If you are still having trouble, please contact us at support@smartypig.com.

      How do I change my temporary password?

    • Starting and Funding a Goal
      What are the minimum and maximum savings goal limits?
      The minimum requirement for a savings goal is $50. The maximum amount for a savings goal is $250,000.

      What are the minimum and maximum deposit limits?
      A minimum deposit of $10 is required to start and maintain a savings goal. There is a maximum deposit limit of $50,000 in a 24-hour period to any savings goal, including contributions made to other SmartyPig account holders' savings goals. The minimum recurring contribution is $10 and the maximum recurring contribution is $50,000. The minimum one time, non-recurring contribution is $1 and the maximum one time, non-recurring contribution is $50,000.

      Will my monthly deposit to my goal be automatically reduced if friends and family make contributions to my goal?
      No. SmartyPig will never automatically adjust your monthly contribution. SmartyPig will suggest a new monthly contribution if you edit your goal to reflect any contributions you may have received from friends and family, but you will have to push SAVE for it to actually change the amount of your monthly deposit.

      How long does it take for my funds to clear or post into my SmartyPig account?
      Credit card transactions take 1 business banking day to clear. ACH transactions take 2 business banking days to post to your account. The earliest a goal can be closed, once all funds are verified, is 5 business days after the most recent transaction has posted to your goal.

      Do I have the option to put my monthly contribution on hold?
      Once an automatic recurring contribution has been set up, it will continue until you meet or stop your goal. You may, however, change your funding frequency at anytime, provided you do not have a pending transaction. You may edit your goal to change your funding frequency, and you may void a contribution on the day it was initiated.

      What if I want to change my goal?
      You can change your goal at anytime up until the point of redemption. To make any changes to your goal, select "Edit Goal" and be sure to SAVE your changes.

      What if I have insufficient funds or have closed my designated funding source at the time when a recurring monthly contribution is set to occur?
      SmartyPig will attempt to withdraw the funds once. If you have insufficient funds, SmartyPig will not reattempt to withdrawal the funds. Your monthly contribution will continue to draft the following month on the day you specified. For security reasons, we may lock your funding source. If this occurs, you will need to contact SmartyPig customer support to resolve the issue.

      What if I don’t have a specific savings goal?
      Select the category of “Miscellaneous”. If you want to change it to something specific or change the amount you want to save or change when you want to reach your goal, you can do that up until the point of redemption.

      Can I make a one-time add money contribution to my goal?
      In addition to your scheduled recurring contributions, you can add money to your goal anytime, up to $50,000 per day, by clicking “Add Money” directly underneath your goal.

    • Funding Source Verification
      What is funding source verification?
      The funding source verification process is in place to ensure your funding source is compatible with SmartyPig and supports ACH transfers, and to prevent user’s goals from being closed to unknown funding sources. Two business days after you have added your funding source to your SmartyPig account, SmartyPig will credit your bank account with two small transactions that will immediately be debited out of your funding source and returned to SmartyPig. User’s will then log into their SmartyPig profile and verify the funding source by entering the deposit amounts in the required fields.

      How do I verify the funding source?
      Once you set up a new funding source, SmartyPig will automatically send two separate transactions to the funding source added. The transactions will arrive in your funding source within 2 business days. Once you have received the deposits, simply log in to your SmartyPig account to verify the funding source. You will have an alert notification display on your dashboard indicating you have an unverified funding source. Simply enter the two deposit amounts you received and click “Verify”.

      How long does the process take?

      Yes. You may still contribute to a goal with an unverified funding source. However, SmartyPig goals cannot be closed if a funding source used to contribute to the goal has not been verified.

      Can I close my goal if I have an unverified funding source?
      SmartyPig goals cannot be closed if the funding source used to contribute to the goal has not been verified. If you are attempting to close a goal to a verified funding source, but have contributed to the goal using an unverified funding source, the goal cannot be closed until all contributing funding sources have been verified.

      What if I don’t receive the deposits?

      Will I receive any fees from SmartyPig or my funding source for this process?
      You will not be charged any fees by SmartyPig for this process. To verify your funding source SmartyPig will credit your funding source with two small transactions that will immediately be debited out of your funding source and returned to SmartyPig. Regulation D limits the number of electronic ACH transfers that can be made from a savings account to six per statement cycle. If your funding source is a savings account, these transactions may be included within Regulation D restrictions. SmartyPig is not responsible for any fees or penalties assessed by your financial institution that may occur by validating this funding source.

    • Partial Withdrawals, Goal-to-Goal Transfers, Void Transactions
      What if I want to withdraw only part of the funds in my goal?
      SmartyPig does not permit partial withdrawals back to a user’s funding source. We offer the option of transferring money between goals in the same savings account, and if both goals are funded by the same funding source. Simply click on the Goal to Goal Transfer link in your goal, and you will be taken through the steps to transfer funds to another goal.

      Can I transfer funds from one goal to another?
      Yes. Funds may be transferred from one goal to another within the same savings account, and if both goals are funded by the same funding source. Funds that are still pending cannot be transferred, and are not eligible for transfer until 10 business days after the funds have posted to a goal. Funds can be transferred in any amount, however, a minimum balance of $10 is required in each goal. There is a limit of five outgoing transfers per calendar month per goal. Accrued interest cannot be transferred and will remain in the goal where it was earned.

      How do I void a transaction?
      An ACH transaction can be voided for a limited time on the day in which it was initiated. If your transaction is voidable, you can find the void button under the “Transaction History” tab of your goal. If a scheduled recurring contribution is voided, your recurring contribution will continue to draft as you have specified.

    • Closing a Goal and Redeeming Your Funds
      Can I stop my goal before it has been reached?
      SmartyPig savings goals may be closed as early as 5 business days after your last transaction has posted to your goal. You will have the option of receiving your current savings plus interest on a gift card of a retailer partnering with SmartyPig, ACH transfer the funds back to your existing checking or savings account, or a combination of both.

      How do I close my goal?
      To close your goal, simply click on Close Goal. You will then have the option of receiving your current savings plus interest on a gift card of a best-in-class retailer partnering with SmartyPig, ACH transfer the funds back to your existing checking or savings account, or a combination of both.

      How can I put my funds back into my bank account?
      SmartyPig offers a reverse ACH redemption option so you can place your funds back into your funding source when you are ready to close your goal. Just simply select the ACH option when you close your goal.

      What happens when I reach my goal?
      Once you have met your savings goal your automatic recurring contributions will stop. Your funds will continue to earn interest until you manually close your goal.

      Why can’t I close my goal?
      Goals cannot be edited or closed if you have a pending transaction. To view your pending transactions, click on Transaction History. The earliest a goal can be closed is 5-business days after the most recent transaction into your goal has posted.

      When trying to close my goal, I am being told I cannot close my goal until all my funds are verified by my bank. How can this happen when my funds have settled to my goal?
      Goals cannot be closed until 5-business days after the most recent transaction into your goal has posted. The 5 business day wait from the time this transaction posts to your goal is to make sure we do not receive any reversal requests from your funding source, which would generally happen during this time window.

      Why is my funding source not showing in the list of funding sources I can close my goal to?
      Only funding sources that have made at least one successful transaction into the goal are eligible to have funds returned to it.

      Can I transfer my funds to an existing funding source, like my bank?
      Yes! You may transfer your funds back to your existing checking or savings account at no additional fee. This process takes 2 business days for the funds to post to your bank account. Funds may only be sent back to the existing checking or savings account that has successfully funded the goal.

      Can I close a goal that has been funded by multiple funding sources?
      If for any reason a goal is funded by multiple funding sources, it may be subject to an additional review period before the goal can be closed. The additional review period may require the user to provide proof of ownership of all funding sources that contributed to the goal, and may be subject to manual goal closure or funds reversal by our banking partner.

      Yes. You may elect to close your goal to gift cards from multiple retailers we partner with.

    • Sharing Your Goals and Accepting Contributions
      What is a “Shared” savings goal?
      A SmartyPig shared savings goal is one where a customer chooses to let his or her friends and family members see his or her savings goals, and allow them to make contributions. SmartyPig customers can also choose to make their savings goals Private where no one except them or a limited access user can view their goals. The ability to share a goal will only be available until October 1, 2016. All gifts made toward a savings goal must be accepted by October 14, 2016 or they will automatically be denied and returned to the sender.

      What can my friends and family members see if I choose to share my goal?
      That depends on the individual customer. Users have the ability to set up their own sharing page. After logging into your SmartyPig Account, go to the “Sharing” tab on the left hand side of your dashboard and click “Page Settings”. Here you can choose if you want to have a public page, what name you want displayed, the ability to add a personal bio, add your personal webpages to share, select which of your open goals you wish to make public, and what information about your goals you wish to share. No banking or personal information is displayed.

      How do friends and family find my account if I choose to share it?
      Two ways: First, when you set up your shared savings goal, you can invite as many people as you want via e-mail to view your savings goal. Second, anyone can search for you in the SmartyPig Find Users tab. If you choose to make your account public, friends and family can search for you by entering your contact info. We also have the ability to search for SmartyPig users through Facebook and Twitter.

      Why can’t my friends and family view my sharing page?
      In order for others to view your public goals and your sharing pages, you must make sure you have enabled your sharing features. To do this, go to the “Sharing” tab on the left hand side of your dashboard and click on “Page Settings”. In the “Enable Sharing” section at the top of the page, please make sure you have selected “On”. You also must make sure you have indicated that you allow others to search for you using your contact information in the “Privacy Settings” on the same page.

      What if I don’t want to share my goals or allow anyone to view my public page?
      If you do not want anyone to view your public page, go to the “Sharing” tab on the left hand side of your dashboard and click on “Page Settings”. In the “Enable Sharing” section at the top of the page, please make sure you have selected “Off”. You will also want to make sure that you have indicated you do not want to accept contributions for any of your goals which can be done on the “Goal Sharing Settings” on the same page.

      What is the minimum and maximum gift amount that can be given?
      The minimum contribution is $10.00 and the maximum is $200.00 per contribution. There is a limit of one contribution per credit card per 24 hr period.
